Born in the 1990s. Janet Im is an artist born and bred in Hong Kong. She is a graduate of the university of Brighton. Janet Im is a full-time artist based in Brighton. She takes inspiration from Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse. Her aim is to put those vibrant and eye-catching compositions and colour usage in paintings. She also enjoys the use of woman figures and decorative lines in Art Nouveau period.
Sometimes inspiration comes from 19th Century Austrian artists such as Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka. Janet looks at how they deform and reconstruct human figures. Janet's work is predominantly concerned with people because she thinks they are endlessly fascinating. A glance, a smile or a gesture has their own story. Her paintings are atmospheric and sensitive. It is not a 'capturing moment' type of painting, she emphasizes on the overall sensation and mood.
She tried to deliver a story visually through different elements of the painting. She takes inspiration from her overloading emotions and uses this to create a story for people to read. She sees her work as a connection with the audiences. She sees people in ther painting as attention seekers, they want to be found, to be understood or at least someone to find their story interesting.
