Georgia O’Keefe at the Tate Modern

I have just returned from visiting the Georgia O’Keefe exhibition at Tate Modern – Wow, what an amazing and breath-taking show!

The exhibition comprised 13 rooms and focused on key chapters in O’Keefe’s artistic career. The viewer got a sense of how prolific an artist she was. In each room there was an introductionary paragraph on the particular chapter the room focused on and a generous selection of artworks that conveyed these ideas. There were also more detailed descriptions that accompanied key works.

Another interesting feature of the show was that, as well as celebrating the talents of such an accomplished artist, it also sought to dispel and possibly challenge ideas associated with her as an artist and what her work stands for:

‘When people read erotic symbols into my paintings, they’re really talking about their own affairs’ (Georgia O’Keefe).
