I spend much of my time observing and sketching scenes from life. These images are often abstract gestures, and suggest rather than represent the general atmosphere of the subject. Along with any photographs I might take, the sketchbooks allow me to return to the essence of a subject and then to create a more successful studio painting. Ideas for paintings are from observed landscapes, cities, street scenes, people, machines, images from television and the media; I subconsciously begin to work out how to paint it and how I might capture the essence and create something of my own.
I strive for spontaneity, gaining confidence through hours spent working with the mediu. I paint and sketch from life, au pleinair, as much as I can, my work is almost exclusively in watercolour with the occasional canvas in oil. Larger paintings and more complex watercolours are created in my studio.
